When it comes to taking care of ourselves women seem to do a fantastic job. From our hair to our clothes, shoes, nails, makeup, facials, massages and so on. When you go to the gym and exercise your body whether it be running, cardio, or cross-fit it can promote pelvic floor dysfunction and can actually do more harm than good. I know many women who are exercise junkies with horribly weak pelvic floors and super tight, fit bodes. How does this happen? Through imbalances. When one part of the body is constantly exercised, lets say our abs, we create imbalances by working one muscles group and not the other. For the abs one can work the rectus abdominis for a tight and flat tummy, but ignores the inner obliques and transverse abdominis. By doing this the rectus abdominis is always held tightly or contracted constantly, an increased pressure is placed on the pelvic floor muscles, which may cause injury or dysfunction.
